Application of Large Language Models in knowledge management

Abstract:

Large Language Models (LLMs) revolutionise knowledge management by simplifying the identification, organisation, storage and sharing of information. Despite limitations like hallucination and knowledge cut-off, LLMs can be enhanced through fine-tuning, prompt engineering, and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG). In this keynote, we explore different options and showcase how Arup developed an AI Agent for project knowledge extraction. This agent leverages LLMs as a brain and RAG for efficient knowledge retrieval in a large infrastructure project. This demonstrates the practical application of these technologies in knowledge management.

Bio:

Ir Kevin Ip leads a digital team at Arup’s Hong Kong office, focusing on design automation, data & analytics, AI and BIM technologies. He began his career at Arup with a strong background in structural dynamics and earthquake engineering. His experience includes working in the Advanced Technology & Research group in London and participating in the Christchurch earthquake rebuild in New Zealand. These experiences have enabled him to transform his domain knowledge into digital engineering. Kevin also serves as the Data Leader of the Digital Executive in the Arup East Asia region and is a member of the IStructE technical panel for Digital Workflow and Computational Design. His role spans a wide range of traditional and new businesses at Arup, involving him in strategic thinking and decision-making processes to drive digital transformation within the firm.

Andy played a pivotal role in developing the highly acclaimed Data Literacy Empowerment Programme (DLEP®) in collaboration with the founding team. Drawing from over 25 years of industry expertise, Andy has held several senior-level positions, including the role of Senior Manager within the Jardine Matheson Group. Kevin has over 25 years of extensive experiences in project management, spanning from small systems such as signaling system and communication system to large scale projects such as Traffic Control and Surveillance System and Automatic Vehicle Clearance Support System. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree and a Master of Science degree. This paper discusses the differences between Knowledge Graphs and LLMs and explores their uses in knowledge elicitation, Nonaka's knowledge creation model, and Knowledge Management Systems.

Bio:

Prof WB Lee is the Emeritus Professor of Manufacturing Engineering of the Department of the Industrial and Systems Engineering, former Head of State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining Technology, and former Director of the Knowledge Management and Innovation Research Centre. Prof Lee was the President of the Asian-Pacific Symposium on Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology (ASPEN), served as ex-Chairman of the Staffing Committee of the Hong Kong Productivity Council, past President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Association of the Advancement of Science and Technology.

Apart from serving on editorial boards of many international journals, Prof Lee was the chief editor of the Journal of Information and Knowledge Management Systems. Since 1997, he has been a pioneer in the research of Dispersed Network Manufacturing in the Mainland. Supported by Microsoft (HK), Prof Lee set up the Digital Factory in 2000 and subsequently the PolyU-Microsoft Enterprise Systems Centre in both logistics engineering and knowledge engineering. Prof Lee has been in the forefront of advancing the research and practice of knowledge management and technologies in various organisations which include manufacturing, public utilities and various government departments. Prof Lee is now the Chairman of the International Committee of the Global MIKE Award.

Stephen Selby lives in Hong Kong. He graduated with a master’s degree in Chinese language and literature from Edinburgh University in 1973 and worked in Mongolia and Europe before taking up a position in the British administration in Hong Kong in 1979. In the Hong Kong SAR Government, post-1997 Stephen served as the Deputy Treasury Secretary and then served as Director of Intellectual Property for 16 years. He retired from the Hong Kong SAR Government in 2011 and is currently an Adjunct Professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Jinan University in Guangzhou, Linyi University in Shandong and East China Normal University in Shanghai. He teaches a course in Intellectual Capital Management at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and was invited as Keynote Speaker to lecture on AI at an international conference in Busan, Korea in May 2023.

She was appointed as the Head of Railway Operations Division in 2017, responsible for overseeing all operational aspects of MRT Jakarta's railway, including station management and the ticketing system. Her career progressed as the Head of Railway Maintenance Division, with primary responsibilities in managing the maintenance and upkeep of MRT Jakarta's facilities and infrastructure until 2023. She served as the Chief Executive Officer of PT Jaklingko Indonesia, a subsidiary of PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda), and has been appointed as the Director of Operations and Maintenance at PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) since October 2023.

Dr Eric Tsui is the Associate Director of the Behaviour and Knowledge Engineering (BAKE) Research Centre at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Since 2015, he has served as the Regional High Impact Editor (Asia) of the Journal of Knowledge Management. Dr Tsui has also championed many technology-enhanced teaching and learning projects and is a crusader of technology-enhanced learning at the university. His research interests include knowledge management technologies, blended learning, cloud services and collaborations. Dr Tsui is the leader of a Professional Certificate and two MOOCs on edX. A recipient of many knowledge management and e-learning international awards, including the Knowledge Management Award for Excellence in 2021 and among the top 50 most influential people in tacit knowledge management in 2023, Dr Tsui was twice listed as an exemplary/outstanding academic in PolyU Annual Reports in the last 7 years.
